Power plant fined for polluting Halda

The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined a power plant in Chittagong Tk 10 lakh for polluting and hampering the biodiversity of Halda river through discharging furnace oil into the river. DoE Director (Enforcement) Mohammed Munir Chowdhury gave the sentence to the project director of a 100 megawatt Peaking Power Plant in Hathazari. On April 11 this year, around 1,600 litres of furnace oil went into Halda river through Changkhali canal for the negligence of the power plant authorities, said a DoE press release. On ground of that, Munir summoned Jasim Uddin Bhuiyan and Md Nure Alam, two executive engineers of the plant, in Dhaka yesterday. Later, after quizzing and investigation, DoE accused the officials along with the project director of the plant in connection with the river pollution. In another drive, DoE seized 105 kgs of contraband polythene from four shops in Jail Road area of the city yesterday. DoE Assistant Director (Technical) Selina Akter led the drive accompanied by Inspector Md Abdur Razzak and a DoE enforcement team. The department summoned the authorities of the shops, M/s M Aziz Enterprise, Farhad and Brothers, Al Madina Packaging, and Shah Amanat Enterprise, at the DoE office on May 28 for hearing on selling and marking contraband polythene, said another DoE press release.
