Students of Chittagong Polytechnic Institute stage a demonstration in Chittagong yesterday.

Students of Chittagong Polytechnic Institute yesterday blocked off an intersection in the port city protesting the government's decision to downgrade the diploma engineers as class-three officials from the previous class-two employee category. Hundreds of students gathered at the city's No. 2 circle, blocking the intersection for half an hour from 1:00pm. Student leaders of the institute also addressed the gathering, protesting the government's decision and demanding reinstatement of the previous class of the diploma engineers. Raihanul Kabir Shamim, president of Polytechnic Student League, told The Daily Star that, “After completion of our four-year diploma, if the government treats us as HSC pass candidates, then it is injustice to all the polytechnic students.” Kamruzzaman, sub-inspector of Panchlaish Police Station, said students of the polytechnic institute carried out the demonstration in a peaceful manner. The students also evacuated the area when police asked them to leave, he said.
