Call to stop misuse of water in Ctg

Staff Correspondent, Ctg
Speakers at a seminar yesterday said, for lack of coordination among service organisations and lack of effective steps towards stopping misuse of water, the national resource is being wasted everyday. They were addressing a day-long seminar titled 'Overall operation of the Pani project' jointly organised by Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (CWASA) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) at Peninsula hotel in Chittagong. Every year, due to leakage in pipelines and lack of appropriate technology and skilled staff to prevent leakages, a huge amount of water supply is being wasted as non-revenue water (NRW), the speakers added. CWASA Chairman Engr AKM Fazlullah, who chaired the seminar, said CWASA has initiated to establish Karnaphuli water treatment plant, which will be able to supply 286,000 cubic meters of water per day and help reduce the gap between the demand and supply of water in the port city. JICA Bangladesh Office Senior Representative Hiroyuki Tomita said, through the ongoing 'Pani' project, transferring leakage detection and prevention technology by piloting and training of WASA staff, the capability of CWASA to reduce NRW would enhance. The project team leader Masuomi Hiroyama, BTCL Director (telecom-1) Prakash Kumar Shil and Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Ltd General Manager Firoz Alam also addressed the seminar.
