Teesta erosion makes 70 families homeless

Erosion by the Teesta River has rendered around 70 families of three villages under Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila homeless in the last four days. The affected villages are Kalmati, Tajpur and Gokunda. The erosion-hit people have taken shelter at their relatives' houses at the adjoining villages. The river devoured at least two fruit gardens, three bamboo clusters and about 32 acres of cultivable land, said locals. Victim Nur Muhammad of Kalmati village told this correspondent that the erosion devoured several houses at the three villages. Abdul Baki, another erosion victim of Tajpur, said erosion by the river hase rendered 30 families of the village homeless in four days since Monday. Mofizul Islam of Gokunda said a large number of people have already left their homesteads, fearing further onslaught of the river and taken shelter at their relatives' houses at different villages of the upazila. Gokunda UP Chairman Golam Mostafa Swapon said the river devoured a large number of homesteads at the villages under the union. “We have informed the authorities about the matter, but to no effect,” he added. Contacted, Lalmonirhat Water Development Board (WDB) Executive Engineer Enayet Ullah said they have sent a letter to the higher authorities, seeking fund to cope with the situation.
