Court summons Fareast Islami Insurance chair, 7 staff

A Dhaka court yesterday summoned the chairman and seven other senior officials of Fareast Islami Life Insurance Company Ltd to appear before it on August 1, hours after a case of fraud was filed against them. The accused were Nazrul Islam, chairman, Ekramul Amin, managing director, Hemayet Ullah, assistant managing director, Sultanul Abedin Mollah, deputy managing director, Abdul Khaleque, senior executive vice president, Ashrafuzzaman Amzad, joint executive vice president, Kamal Hossain Haulader, senior joint vice president, and Atel Mahmud, senior executive vice president of Fareast Islami Life Insurance Company Ltd. Nazmul Huq Liton, former joint vice president of the company, filed the case against them with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka on charges of misappropriating Tk 10 lakh. In his complaint, Liton alleged that he resigned from the company due to personal reasons on January 9 this year. Later on February 6, he submitted an application requesting the company to pay him his dues worth Tk 10 lakh. Instead, the company published an advertisement in the Daily Bangladesh Pratidin on February 14 saying that Liton was terminated from his service and refused to pay his dues, he added. After the hearing, Metropolitan Magistrate Atiqur Rahman recorded the statement of the complainant and issued the summon. Meanwhile on Sunday, Sadiqur Rahman, former joint executive vice president of the same company, also filed a fraud case with the same court against the company high ups, excluding Atel Mahmud, on charges of misappropriating Tk 18 lakh. After the hearing, the court issued summons asking the accused to appear before it on July 31. In his complaint, Sadiqur alleged that he resigned from the company on December 20 last year and submitted an application on January 10 requesting the company to pay him his dues worth Tk 18 lakh. But the company refused to pay his dues and published an advertisement in the Daily Naya Diganta on February 7 saying that Sadiqur was terminated from his service, he said.
