Journalists in the port city yesterday demanded immediate arrest of and punishment to the miscreants who attacked journalists and staff at the office of bdnews24.com in the capital on Monday night. They also warned the government of tougher programme if there is any delay in taking necessary legal measures against the accused. They made the demand at a rally organised by Chattagram Photojournalist Association (CPA) at Chittagong Press Club (CPC) with the participation of the city's journalist and photojournalist leaders. The journalists also formed a human chain in front of CPC and brought out a procession from its premises to voice their demand. “Recently, the attacks and torture on journalists both by police and miscreants across the country has increased, which should be immediately mitigated by setting up exemplary punishment measures by the government,” said Chittagong Union of Journalists (CUJ) President Shahid Ul Alam. Demanding faster probe into the recent incidents of attack on or killing of journalists, including the Sagar-Runi murder and police attack on Prothom Alo photojournalists, ensuring exemplary punishment to the accused and stopping torture on journalists by law enforcers, the speakers said an ultimatum will be sent to the home minister and her deputy to step-down in case they fail to satisfy these demands. Presided over by CPA Sectary Didarul Alam, the rally was attended also by CPA President Manjurul Alam.
