Says DMP
Police have prepared a digital database of around 600 vehicles lifters with their recent photographs, addresses and other details to check such crimes.
"We have prepared a digital database of 600 criminals engaged in vehicle lifting," additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Mokhlesur Rahman told the news agency.
Names, recent photographs and addresses of the criminals and even cases filed against them were included in the database, he said adding "the database helps us a lot to immediately locate the criminals."
Fifty syndicates of vehicle lifters are active in the capital and its adjoining areas and names of the syndicate members and their locations have been included in the database, he said
Raju Ahmed Raju, Roni, Hannan, Habil, Iqbal, Nadim, Rabbi, Shaheed and Habu are among the ringleaders of the 50 syndicates, he mentioned.
Eighty per cent of the stolen vehicles, particularly private cars, and microbuses are being used in conducting drug trading, snatching, mugging and other criminal activities, said the police officer.
According to police statistics, over 600 vehicles are stolen alone from the capital per year and over 30 per cent of these vehicles could never be recovered.
The statistics said 640 vehicles, mostly cars, were lifted from the capital in 2010, while the figure was 632 in 2011 and 234 until April this year.
