Several social, political and rights groups condemned the recent police harassment and assaults on journalists and lawyers, including a teenaged girl. Expressing utter shock and rage at the incidents, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad, in a statement yesterday, demanded fair and proper investigations into the offences and punishment to the offenders. They also demanded enforcement of further security measures at the Dhaka magistrate court premises and assurance from the authorities concerned to prevent recurrence of such occurrences. In another statement, Workers' Party of Bangladesh said it has become a norm for the police to harass the common people in any situation. Members of law enforcement agencies, such as police, who commit such crimes should be brought to justice and punished accordingly, they said. Samajik Protirodh Committee, Sammilito Samajik Andolon, Jatia Samajtantrik Dal, Nagorik Udyog and Bangladesh National Women Lawyers' Association expressed similar views and demanded exemplary punishment to the assaulters.
