Don't engage in rows with journalists
DMP boss urges colleagues
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Benazir Ahmed at a conference yesterday warned his fellows not to engage in rows with newsmen while discharging their duties.
The warning came against the backdrop of some recent incidents of police harassment and assaults on journalists and lawyers, including a teenaged girl.
Police must not “cross the limit” whatever the situation may be and must inform high-ups about the situation before going for any kind of action, he added.
The monthly crime conference, scheduled for June 11, was held at Rajarbagh Police Line in the afternoon yesterday to discuss about some recent incidents and the scheduled topics, said an additional commissioner of DMP Detective Branch.
During the discussions, from 4:00pm to around 8:15pm, police officials presented some crime statistics and discussed on ways to reduce those.
When some of the officials criticised journalists for carrying out “irrational” activities, Benazir asked them to explain why and how the incidents with journalist and lawyers occurred.
He asked them to work in such a way so that newspapers do not get the scope to publish any negative photos and news of police.
Officials ranking from assistant commissioner and above were present at the meeting.
