Himu's killers still at large, 'threat' family

Staff Correspondent, Ctg

Fear and grief clouds over Himu's family members as eight days have passed into his death and yet police cannot arrest or even trace out his killers in the port city. Himu's parents and relatives alleged that police are not willing to arrest the accused as an influential leader of Chittagong city corporation (CCC) is providing them shelter. Eighteen-year old Himadri Majumdar Himu died on May 23 in the capital's Square Hospital, 26 days after his friends pushed him down from the fourth floor of Farhad Mansion in Panchlaish Residential Area in Chittagong, after beating him mercilessly and unleashing three dogs on him. At current, Himu's family is living in an insecure situation as none of the accused was arrested. Sri Prakash Das Asit, a distance uncle of Himu, said, “Some unknown man were threatening me over the phone for two to three days after I filled the case”. Asit filed a murder case with Panchlaish Police Station against Junaid Ahmed Riad, his father Shah Selim Tipu, also owner of Farhad Mansion, and his friends Shaju, Danny and Shaon in connection with Himu's killing. Himu's father Prabir Kanti Majumdar said Tipu contacted him over phone after Himu's death. But, police could do less with the number, he said. Himu's mother Gopa Majumdar said, “Police is working for the criminals. As Tipu has money and influence, police would not arrest him”. “Since the killers are free and out of jail, we are feeling threatened now,” she said. She urged media to not go silent on the incident of the brutal killing of her son and to help her family get justice. Himu's parents also sought help from the prime minister and the home minister to assist the arrest and trial of their son's killers. A relative of Himu, seeking anonymity, alleged that Md Giasuddin, counsellor of Bagmoniram Ward, gave shelter to Tipu in his house for three days. Contacted, Giasuddin denied the allegation, saying “I do politics. That is why some people are trying to defame me.” Kazi Jahir, sub-inspector of Panchlaish Police Station, also investigation officer of the case, and Md Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of the station, said police are trying their best to arrest the accused. On April 28, Prabir recorded a GD with Panchlaish Police Station in connection with the torture on Himu, a student of Summerfield School and College, on April 27. Same day, in the hospital bed, Himu gave a statement giving a description of the brutal torture he was subject to and the four boys who did that to him.
