First ever environment Olympiad to start Jun 30

The country's first ever Environment Olympiad will begin on June 30 in the capital with a goal to create awareness among everyone and engage the younger generation in protecting the environment. Brainchild of late Prof Muzaffer Ahmad, the Olympiad will be jointly organised by Bangladesh Paribesh Andolan (Bapa) and North South University (NSU). The eminent economist and former president of Bapa was a strong advocate for environment protection. The announcement was made yesterday at a press conference titled “Inaugural Environment Olympiad-2012” at Dhaka Reporters' Unity in the capital. Former University Grants Commission Chairman Prof Nazrul Islam said the campaign for protecting environment needed to be intensified through participation of everyone in the country. Besides students, other people should engage in the competition, he added. The Olympiad will be held annually. Initially, it will be held in the capital with around 500 students of colleges and universities participating in the programme. Later, students from all over the country will be included in the competition. Each academic institution can send two teams comprising five students and a couple of teachers who would play the role of advisers to their respective teams. Finally, the categories in which awards will be given are Best Environment Team, Best Environment Club, Best Environment Writer, Best Environment Blogger, Best Photo-story Writer, Best Filmmaker and the Best Academic Institution.
