Blockade over death of man
Locals blockaded the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar road on the south side of the Third Karnaphuli Bridge for around two hours following the death of a man in a road accident on Monday night.
The deceased was Md Nesar Ahmed, 24, hailing from Charlakhya village under Karnaphuli Police Station.
Quoting eyewitnesses, police said Nesar was crossing the road on the south side of the Bridge when a speedy micro-bus bound for Cox's Bazar ran him over around 9:30pm leaving him dead on the spot.
Two hours after the incident, hundreds of locals gathered at the spot and formed a blockade there at around 11:30pm demanding a foot-over bridge to be built at the site.
The agitated locals also vandalised around 30 vehicles, burned tyres on the road, and set fire to one of the toll counters of the bridge.
On information, officials of Karnaphuli Police Station and two platoons from Special Reserve Force of Chittagong Metropolitan Police rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control, said Sub-Inspector Arun Khan of Karnaphuli police Station.
The infuriated locals threw brickbats at the police and chanted slogans, demanding a foot-over bridge. Three constables of Karnaphuli Police Station, were injured in the incident.
