Warrant against 15
A Chittagong court yesterday issued arrest warrants against 15 accused in three cases, out of six, filed in connection with torching vehicles and clashing with police on May 13 in the port city.
The 15 accused, which include seven BNP leaders, are absconding.
The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Abdur Rahman passed the order after taking cognisance of the cases and also fixed June 13 for hearing on charge framing against the accused, said court sources.
The absconding BNP leaders are Chittagong city unit General Secretary Shahadat Hossain, Abu Said Ripan, Hossain Iqbal, Nurul Amin, Faisal Mohammad Yunus, Kalimullah and Rangunia Upazila Chairman Abu Ahmed Hasnat.
Out of the three cases, two were lodged with Kotwali Police Station and one with Khulshi Police Station and police submitted their charge sheets on May 23.
Meanwhile, the same court yesterday sent to jail Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker ANM Shamsul Islam after rejecting his bail prayers.
On may 13, over 100 people were injured as law enforcers clashed with leaders and activists of the BNP-led 18-party alliance when police obstructed two opposition processions heading towards the BNP's city office to attend a rally.
Six cases were lodged in connection with the May 13 violence against over 2,000 leaders and activists of BNP-led 18-party alliance.
In a case for setting vehicles on fire at WASA Intersection, Shamsul Islam and 22 others were accused.
In another case for torching vehicles and clashing with cops in front of Nasiman Bhaban, 30 BNP leaders including Shahadat Hossain and BNP north district unit General Secretary Aslam Chowdhury were accused.
