Enlighten youths on values: Dr Kamal

Staff Correspondent
Noted jurist Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday urged veteran academicians and intellectuals to enlighten the new generation on their values. "I would like to request you to advise youths for bringing out a weekly publication, through which they will nurture the values of veteran academicians and intellectuals," he said. He said that on the horrible night of March 26, 1971, Dhaka University was the first target of Pakistani army, as people connected to the university had raised voice for people and spoken the truth after being driven by values. Dr Kamal was speaking at a grand reunion titled "Praner Mela" organised by Alokito Nogori (enlightened city), a social organisation, at a restaurant in Dhaka to celebrate three eminent personalities of Bangladesh receiving international awards. Noted academician Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman has been awarded "Rabindranath Tagore Birth Centenary Plaque", Dr Kamal Hossain "Pandit Iswarchandra Vidyasagar Gold Plaque" and Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman "Indira Gandhi Gold Plaque". The Asiatic Society in Kolkata has honoured them with the awards for their outstanding contribution in their respective fields. The plaques were handed over on May 7. Alokito Nogori offered its felicitations to the three personalities by giving them crests. Addressing the celebratory programme, Dr Atiur Rahman said Bangladesh Bank was working to provide facilities to the marginal people, including poor farmers, widows, elderly people and poor students. These are challenging tasks, he said, and expressed his vow to continue giving his efforts for the improvement of the living standard of the marginal people. Prof Anisuzzaman was not present on the occasion. Noted academician Dr Khan Sarwar Murshid chaired the programme, while Prof Zillur Rahman Siddiqui, Prof AFM Salauddin Ahmed, Dr Sirajul Islam, Prof Ajoy Roy, Prof Rafiqul Islam, Bangladesh Krishi Bank Chairman Khondkar Ibrahim Khaled, litterateur Hasnat Abdul Hye, and Alokito Nogori Chief Executive Aminur Rahaman Rana, among others, attended it. All of them highly praised the award winners for their talents and extended greetings to them.
