Projects for women's development urged
Speakers at a discussion yesterday called on the government to implement well-defined projects designed for women's development and ensure economic progress at all levels without discrepancy.
The discussion titled “National Budget 2012-2013: Analysis of Gender Sensitivity in Policy Making and Project Design” was organised by Steps towards Development (STD), an NGO working towards development of women and gender equality held in Cirdap auditorium in the capital.
Ranjan Karmakar, executive director of STD, said budget-monitoring cells present in every ministry have to become gender sensitive in order to make women issues mainstream and work in their favour.
Mamunur Rashid, coordinator of STD, made several demands to the government including acknowledging women's role in food growth and food security, mobilizing local resources to ensure women's economic growth, and providing women with social securities and government protection from all kinds of oppression.
Dr Kaniz Siddque, freelance consultant, said the government should analyse the projects designed for women to identify the effectiveness of implementing them.
Experts from NGOs and government organisations should form monitoring cells to monitor project implementation and document the results for future improvement of the projects, she added.
Professor M M Akash, lecturer of Dhaka University's Economic Department, Dr Nazneen Ahmed, senior research fellow at Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies, spoke among others.
