'Highest number of journo persecution in May this year'

A rights watchdog reported that in the last month 15 journalists were injured and 12 others harassed while discharging their duty. A report of Bangladesh Manabadhikar Bastabayan Sangstha showed that out of the five months of the current year, May witnessed the highest number of incidents of journalist persecution, said a press release. Miscreants, hijackers, and terrorists killed 49 people during the month and mob beating took six lives. According to the report, the number of such crimes increased due to the failure of implementation of prevailing laws and people's lack of confidence in judiciary. Three people were killed in 'gunfights' with Rab and one committed suicide in police custody, said the report. Social violence claimed 73 lives while political atrocity killed three and injured 783 people. Road accident took 168 lives during the month. The organisation prepared the report based on articles published in different newspapers and various research papers.
