Fugitive leaders of Jamaat attend rally
Three top fugitive leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir yesterday attended and delivered speech at the BNP grand rally.
The leaders, Jamaat acting chief Maqbul Ahmed, its central leader Nurul Islam Bulbul, and General Secretary of the party's student wing Islami Chatra Shibir Delowar Hossain Saidee, promised to oust the government through movement.
They remained on the stage until the rally ended at 6:45pm without any police intervention although a Dhaka court had directed police to publish a circular asking the trio to surrender to the court by June 13.
Anwar Hossain, deputy commissioner of Motijheel division, told The Daily Star that he had heard of the presence of the leaders in the rally.
Police were trying to arrest them, he added.
The three went into hiding on the night of April 29 after police had filed two cases with Tejgaon and Shahbagh police stations against about 45 opposition leaders in connection with a blast inside the Secretariat and torching of a bus in front of Prime Minister's Office during hartal hours.
