A team of Department of Environment (DoE) fined a textile dying factory in Fatullah Tk 8.5 lakh for dumping untreated effluent into Shitalakhya River yesterday. The factory owner has been running the factory for about 15 years without an environment clearance certificate, said DoE Director Mohammad Munir Chowdhury. During this time, the factory released around 26 lakh litres of effluent in the river as it had no Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), he said. The factory owner, in an undertaking to the DoE team, pledged to set up an ETP within three months, Munir Chowdhury said. Meanwhile, a mobile court yesterday fined a drinking water plant in Chittagong city Tk 50,000 for producing drinking water in an unhygienic environment, having no water testing facilities, not cleaning the water jars properly and using Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution's logo illegally. The court led by District Executive Magistrate Jannatul Ferdaus slapped the fine on the factory, “Neon Drinking Water”, during a drive in the city's Bagghona area. The court also sealed the factory for four months and took an undertaking from its owner. Earlier on October 29, 2011, another mobile court had fined the factory the same amount.
