Govt's achievements surpass pledges: PM
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday claimed that in the last three and a half years, her government had implemented more than what her party pledged in the 2008 election manifesto.
The rest of the pledges would be materialised before this tenure ends, said Hasina, also president of the ruling Awami League.
She was addressing the grassroots leaders and activists of Thakurgaon district AL at Gono Bhaban.
Referring to the 5,195 local government polls and by-elections held under her government, Hasina said those were held so “peacefully and neutrally” that people did not notice any violence. “No election was held so peacefully and fairly after 1975,” she claimed.
“But in 1994, when BNP was in power, several hundred people were killed during the local elections.”
Cautioning party leaders and activists ahead of the next general elections, Hasina said, “Don't do anything that may shatter people's confidence in our government. We will have to go to the people again in the next election."
About the Vision-2021, Hasina said, “We've set targets to turn our country into a middle-income one by 2021. But I feel pity for our opposition leader [Khaleda Zia] as she has set it to 2030…”
“By setting the goal, she [Khaleda] has actually pushed back the country by 10 years."
