Fakhrul urges govt

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday asked the government to resolve the ongoing political crisis through discussions within the BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's given timeframe. He also demanded cancellation of the remand order on top leaders of BNP's front and associate bodies. A Dhaka court yesterday allowed police to take these leaders into remand in an arson case. “The chairperson has provided an opportunity by giving more time instead of declaring tougher programmes. The government should take the opportunity instead of repressing the opposition,” he said. Fakhrul was addressing a press briefing at the chairperson's political office in the capital's Gulshan. Khaleda, at BNP's June 11 rally, threatened to declare tougher programmes after Eid demanding restoration of a non-party government system. Fakhrul asked the government to take necessary steps to protect the country's readymade garment industry from the ongoing unrest. Earlier, BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, at a human chain programme organised by Jatiyatabadi Textile Engineers of Bangladesh, a pro-BNP body, blamed India for the unrest. “India is conspiring to destroy our garment industry. Indian agents are behind the anarchy,” he said. On Moyeen's statement, Fakhrul said, “It is his opinion.” Fakhrul rejected Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam's remark that BNP can either go to court to revive the caretaker government system or restore the system by being elected with a two-third majority in the next election.
