Shake off servile mentality

From the June 10, 2012 issue of The Daily Star we learned that ten Bangladeshi journalists, who went to visit the Tipaimukh dam site on the Barak river in India's north-eastern Manipur state on June 6, only got a bird's eye view as the helicopter carrying them could not land. This is not the first time, in the past also a team from Bangladesh had to return because the helicopter carrying them was unable to land. It seems very unusual; why could not India arrange it in such a way that Bangladeshi team would be able to see the site? It is unacceptable in every sense. Maybe the helicopters carrying Bangladeshi observers will be able to land when the dam is completed, a structure which will cause destruction in Bangladesh. Teesta water sharing deal is uncertain, BSF will continue killing Bangladeshis at the borders, India will go on giving false hopes and Bangladesh will always be ready to do whatever India wants not caring about the interest of the country. We are immensely grateful to India for its help during our liberation war. We thought at that time it was a neighbour helping a neighbour in distress but the matter is not so simple. India has its own agenda, a long-term plan about how benefit can be derived from a grateful nation. Our government must shake off this servile mentality and stand for its legitimate rights. Ours is a sovereign country, it must uphold its dignity.
