AL lawmaker slams proposed budget

Awami League lawmaker Khan Tipu Sultan became the first to criticise some budgetary proposals including the provision for whitening black money, in the parliament yesterday. In the discussions held for the proposed budget of next fiscal, there seemed to be a competition among the ruling MPs on flattering the government for placing such a “pro-people and welfare budget”. But in the absence of the BNP-led opposition, who has been boycotting the House, Tipu Sultan created some debate after criticising the budget. He termed the proposal for imposing tax at source on mobile phone bills as “annoying” and suggested scrapping the proposal. He criticised Finance Minister AMA Muhith for his proposal on generating employment without outlining the target. On money whitening Tipu said, “he [Muhith] should explain why the provision was continued. It was unclear who would benefit from it.” Jessore's MP demanded a clear position on coal policy and questioned government's borrowing from banks. Fisheries and livestock minister proposed increasing tax on imported milk powder to protect local industries.
