Universities to open oceanology course
Says Nahid
Dhaka University and some other public universities will begin courses on oceanology from this year, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid told the parliament yesterday.
He said the education ministry and the University Grants Commission have sent letters to all public universities to open such courses in their universities.
“I hope the decision to start oceanology courses in all public universities will be implemented within the next two to three years,” the minister said.
At present only Chittagong University has Marine Science Department.
The government has taken the initiative to create skilled manpower in marine science following Bangladesh's March 14 victory over Bay of Bengal.
On the day, Bangladesh won a landmark verdict at the International Tribunal, which sustained its claim to 200-nautical-mile exclusive economic and territorial rights in the Bay of Bengal rejecting Myanmar's claims.
In response to a query on salaries, the education minister said officials are working under the ministry to prepare separate pay scale for teachers and employees involved in education activities.
