47 opposition leaders get bail

A Chittagong court yesterday granted interim bail to 47 leaders and activists of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami in a case filed for vandalising vehicles. The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Monsur granted the bail until charge framing in the case. The bail came following a High Court order. All the defendants, including Chittagong city Jamaat Chief and lawmaker from Satkania ANM Shamsul Islam and Raozan municipality Mayor Abdullah Al Hasan, appeared before the court yesterday and sought bail. On May 13, over 100 people, including policemen were injured in a clash between police and the BNP-led 18-party activists near the city BNP office at Kazir Dewry. Three vehicles were torched and many others were vandalised during the clash. A day later, six cases were filed against 2,100 opposition men.
