The next parliamentary election should be held under such a government system, which will reflect public demand and expectation, some eminent personalities said yesterday. Be it "caretaker", "partisan", "non-partisan" or "all-party", the system will have to ensure continuation of democracy and fair election to be acceptable both at home and abroad, they said. The speakers made the observation at a dialogue styled "What type of government we want for holding the national election", the first programme of private TV channel Ekattor, which was officially launched last night at the capital's Bangabandhu International Conference Centre. Noted Jurist Barrister Rafiqul Haque stressed the need for dialogue among the chiefs of two major political parties for developing an effective mechanism to hold the next general polls. Veteran lawyer Barrister M Amir-ul-Islam viewed that strong political will, a strong election commission and an effective parliament were the key factors to overcome the crisis. Left politician Rashed Khan Menon said the crisis would not be solved until the opposition parties come to parliament. "If we discuss together, the crisis will surely be solved." The election is not about win or defeat of a political party, but a matter of democracy and peoples' rights, said Sultana Kamal, former adviser to a caretaker government. So, creation of a congenial atmosphere is a must so that people can vote without fear, she observed. Saarc Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Anisul Huq and election observer Sharmin Murshed also spoke at the dialogue moderated by Ekattor TV Chief Executive Officer Samia Zaman. Mozammel Babu is the chief editor and managing director of the new TV channel.
