5 die in road crashes
Five people were killed and at least 40 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barisal and Thakurgaon yesterday.
Staff correspondent reports, a tea vendor was killed as a bus hit him in Sobhanbagh area of the capital yesterday.
The deceased is Jiku Das, 24, hailing from Raojan in Chittagong.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police said a bus hit Jiku while he was crossing the road around 1:30pm.
He succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Our Mymensingh correspondent says, an unidentified bus helper died and 20 others got injured when the bus rammed a tempoo on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Ukilbari in Trishal upazila yesterday.
The injured were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital and local clinics.
In another accident, motorcyclist Abul Mansur, 40, was killed as a sand-laden truck rammed his motorbike on Balipara-Trishal road at Balipara in the upazila yesterday morning.
In Barisal, fruit trader Abdus Salam Howladar, 53, died instantly as a jackfruit-laden truck fell into a ditch beside Barisal-Dhaka highway in Barthi area of Gournadi upazila yesterday morning.
In another incident, a bus, breaking railings of a bridge, plunged into a ditch beside the same highway in the area yesterday, injuring at least its 20 passengers.
Six of the inured were admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital while the others to Gournadi Upazila Health Complex.
In Thakurgaon, Asha, 7, daughter of Abdul Karim, died as a pick-up van hit her on Ranishankoil-Pirganj road at Gogorh village in Ranishankoil upazila yesterday.
