Ubiquitous corruption slows growth
Says Menon
President of Bangladesh Workers Party Rashed Khan Menon yesterday said corruption had swept over the country and held back the expected growth of the economy.
Despite many obstacles, Bangladesh has recorded 6.3 percent growth in the last fiscal year, he said, but the economy would grow 2.5 percent higher if corruption could be stopped.
Poverty would also have reduced to below 11 percent in the country if there was no corruption, Menon said, while addressing the council of Bangladesh Yuba Maitri, Chittagong district unit, at Studio Theatre of Chittagong Muslim Institute in the city.
The lawmaker censured the appointment business in different government offices. Referring to the recent railway cash scandal of Tk 70 lakh, he said appointment business was open secret not only in the railway but also in most of the government offices.
The youths have become frustrated over jobs, while many of them are getting addicted, he said, demanding appointment based on talent and qualifications to save the youth from ruination.
Talking about USA's not granting Bangladesh GSP facility, Menon criticised that they [America] wanted to "control our business through different pacts" but did not want to give Bangladeshi products GSP facility in their country.
He also accused the US of having "a greedy eye" on Bangladesh's sea resources.
