College girl 'kills herself for poverty'
A female college student yesterday allegedly killed herself in Vangura Boral Bridge area of Vangura upazila reportedly due to poverty.
The victim Chameli Shutrodhar, 25, and daughter of Jatindranath Shutradhar of village Patharghata in the upazila, jumped under a Dinajpur-bound train around 10:20am. She died instantly.
Locals said, Chameli was distressed and sickness and poverty had devastated their lives.
Quoting the victim's family, Mujibar Rahman, sub-inspector at Sirajganj GRP station, said, "Chameli was in frustration due to the poverty of her family, and facing problems to continue her study."
Her elder sister recently has fallen victim to fatal heart disease. Doctors recommended transplanting valves of her sister's heart, that needs huge money, he said.
In despair, she took her life, he added.
Locals said Chameli's father was the only earning member of the family but he was unable to earn enough money to lead his family as he has also been suffering from old age complications.
