The ruling Awami League celebrates it 63rd founding anniversary today. On the occasion, the national and party flags will be hoisted at AL offices across the country. The party will place wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in the capital at 7:00am. At 7:15am, the AL will release pigeons and balloons and play national anthem to start the day. The party will hold a discussion at 3:30pm at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre, which AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will address as chief guest. Leaders of different political parties and intellectuals will also speak. On this day in 1949, East Pakistan Awami Muslim League was founded at the historic Rose Garden in Old Dhaka. The word "Muslim" was later dropped to give the name a secular look. The AL led all democratic movements of then East Pakistan up till the 1971 Liberation War under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. To mark the day, AL's all organisational units will bring out processions, hold discussions and rallies, and play Bangabandhu's landmark speeches in loud speakers. AL General Secretary and LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam urged party men to observe the day in a befitting manner.
