Dhaka slips in peace rankings

Bangladesh stood 91st among 158 countries in a ranking of “national peacefulness” published in the 2012 Global Peace Index (GPI) of the Institute for Economics and Peace on June 12. GPI takes into account 23 qualitative and quantitative indicators, including a nation's level of military expenditure, relations with neighbouring countries, percentage of prison population and domestic and international conflict. This year Bangladesh slid six positions from 2011's 83rd. The country was 87th in 2010 and 90th in 2009. The 2012 GPI ranked Iceland as the world's most peaceful country. Denmark was placed in the second position, followed by New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Austria, Ireland, Slovenia, Finland and Switzerland. The 10 least peaceful countries (from the bottom up) were Somalia, Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq, Democratic Republic of Congo, Russia, North Korea, Central African Republic, Israel and Pakistan. The GPI took data from sources like International Institute of Strategic Studies and World Bank and was tested against a range of potential “drivers” or determinants of peace, including democracy levels, transparency, education and national wellbeing.
