Bill placed to make uniform retirement age
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid placed a bill in parliament yesterday seeking to bring uniformity in the retirement age of public university teachers.
At present, the retirement age of teachers of universities of Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, and Jahangirnagar is 65 years. But the retirement age of teachers of the remaining 29 public universities is 60 years, said the minister.
“It is rational to bring uniformity in the retirement age for all teachers,” said Nahid in a brief statement tagged with copies of the bill.
The vice chancellors of all the public universities held a meeting on May 18 in 2010 with president, who is also the chancellor of the universities, and proposed to increase the retirement age to 65 years.
President Zillur Rahman agreed to their proposal.
The bill has an overriding provision saying it will get priority over other laws on the public universities regarding retirement age.
The House sent the bill to the parliamentary standing committee on the education ministry for scrutiny.
Meanwhile, the parliament yesterday passed a bill for enactment of a law for introducing a new wage structure for labourers working in state owned industries, which produce products.
