Jail Term Expiry
Why Myanmar nationals in jail
HC asks govt
The High Court has issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks why it should not be directed to send 39 Myanmar nationals, who have been in Cox's Bazar Jail for around 12 years after the expiry of their sentences, back to their home.
The HC bench of Justice Hasan Foez Siddique and Justice Md Jahangir Hossain on June 14 came up with the rule following a writ petition filed by Bangladesh Human Rights Foundation (BHRF).
Advocates Zia Habib Ahasan and Md Sharif Uddin, two officials of BHRF, jointly filed the petition.
The detained Myanmar citizens are stateless and leading a subhuman life in jail since neither Myanmar government nor Bangladesh government recognizes them as citizens, the petitioners said.
The petitioners prayed to the court to direct the officials concerned to take steps to send the Myanmar citizens back to their country or to provide them rehabilitation at any refugee shelter after releasing them.
Zia Habib Ahasan told The Daily Star that they got the copy of HC order yesterday.
