Prevent Thalassaemia

Prof. Waqar A Khan, President, Dhaka Shishu Hospital Thalassaemia Centre

Thalassaemia is a very significant genetic blood disorder in Bangladesh. It is presumed that nearly 7000 children are born with this disease and there are about 1 lakh Thalassaemia patients in our country. Sixty percent of our donated blood is utilised for the thalassaemic patients. It costs about 7 to 8 thousand taka every month to give adequate treatment to a thalassaemic patient which is not affordable to majority of our patients. Our infant mortality rate is falling and more children are now coming to hospitals with genetic disorder like thalassaemia. Steps are now being taken all over the world to prevent the birth of thalassaemic children. Our neighbouring country India recently rolled a programme to prevent and manage hereditary genetic blood disorder. In India genetic labs will be set up in each medical college for prenatal diagnosis and money has been allotted for taking care of thalassaemic children. Thalassaemia is a preventable disease. It is time our government took steps to prevent the birth of thalassaemic children.
