Drug addiction on rise among students
Prothom Alo discussion told
Speakers at a discussion yesterday expressed deep concern over the high number of school students turning towards drugs, which is plunging the young generation into frustration and narrowing the horizon for future leadership.
Prothom Alo organised the discussion at its office in the capital.
It also conferred awards on eight journalists from print and electronic media for outstanding reports on drug abuse.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said, “Traditional education system cannot build digital Bangladesh. We need updated education that would interest students and keep them from choosing drugs.”
The problem is intensified due to lack of recreation facilities among the youth that is pushing them into drug addiction, he said.
“It is rare to find schools in the country that provides students with a playground or other entertainment facilities,” he added.
Nahid stressed on raising moral values and social awareness to fight against drug abuse, which is replacing the spirit of youth with frustrations and uncertainties.
The awardees were Golam Mortuza, Monirul Islam and Arup Roy of Prothom Alo, Shampa Hasan of Banglabazar, Ali Azam of Dainik Sangbad, Shafique Shaheen of NTV, Mostofa Mallik of Channel i and Ilias Hossain of ETV.
Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmud Khandaker also addressed the programme while Associate Professor and Head of Psychotherapy at National Institute of Mental Health Dr Mohit Kamal and Executive Director of Apon Brother Ronald Drahozal attended it among others.
