JS mourns landslide victims' death
Parliament yesterday expressed deep shock at the death of scores of people due to landslides in the three hill districts in greater Chittagong.
“We are deeply shocked, the House is expressing deep condolence to the deceased family members,” Speaker Abdul Hamid said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina informed the House that her government had already deployed members of the Armed Forces at the devastated areas to rescue victims.
“I was monitoring the situation in those areas since it had been raining for the last several days. We warned locals to move to safer places to avert possible landslides. But 94 people died which is so unfortunate,” she said.
She said her government sent relief and other assistance there to mitigate sufferings of the victims.
Earlier, the House expressed concern over the landslide disaster in the three hill districts and asked the government to send adequate amount of relief to minimise victims' sufferings.
Scores of people were reported dead as torrential rains sparked a series of landslides in different parts of Bandarban and Cox's Bazar districts on Tuesday.
Speaking on the natural disaster, three lawmakers demanded the government form a judicial committee to identify reasons of water logging in Chittagong and take stern action against those responsible for waterlogging.
Speaking on a point of order, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal MP Mayeen Uddin Khan Badal raised the issue and alleged that landslide victims were not getting relief for mismanagement.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (Bapa), an environmental organisation, urged the government to take immediate steps to rescue the landslide victims.
