Cinema Halls
Owners giving up business
Says info minister
Construction of multi-storied commercial complex by demolishing cinema halls has now become more profitable, therefore, owners of the country's two-thirds of cinema halls abandoned their long-running business.
Information Minister Abul Kamal Azad told this in the parliament yesterday.
“Owners of only 450 out of total 1,200 licensed cinema halls are still operating their businesses across the country,” he said replying to lawmakers' queries.
He said the remaining owners of 750 theatres have shut down their cinema halls and constructed multi-storied commercial complexes in places of those.
He informed the House that his government has been encouraging the sector by declaring film making, distribution, and exhibition as an industry.
“The government is also actively considering declaring five-year's tax holiday and providing other benefits for cinema halls,” he added.
TRUST FUND FOR JOURNOS
The government is actively considering formation of a “Trust Fund” for journalists, the information minister said. “The present government has already formed a welfare trust fund to give assistance to sick and insolvent journalists. Besides, journalists, injured in accidents, will get money from the fund for treatment purposes,” he said. POLICY FOR PRIVATE TV
The minister said the government is actively considering formulating a policy aimed at making private satellite television channels more people-oriented and to make them more neutral. He claimed that the news aired by Bangladesh Television is objective as the state-run TV station has to be accountable to the country's people for every programme.
