CCC mayor refuses to take responsibility

Staff Correspondent, Ctg
Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor M Manjur Alam yesterday said he would not take the responsibility of recent waterlogging problem in the Chittagong city as it was caused by downpour. “If it would have been flood, I would take the responsibility,” he said. He said this after announcing the CCC's proposed budget for 2012-2013 fiscal at its conference hall. The mayor said waterlogging problem was a top priority in his election manifesto. According to the commitment 16 canals were re-excavated, he claimed. During the downpour, drains and canals were filled with silts from hills blocking natural flow of water, he said. The waterlogging problem could be avoided by setting up a drainage system in Chittagong city following the Master Plan (1995) of Chittagong Development Authority (CDA), he said adding that the government should implement the master plan with highest priority. The CCC Mayor said he sent a proposal to the government last year for digging canals in the city. But the government is yet to approve the proposal. About waterlogging at Shah Amanat International Airport, he said the airport authority did not inform the CCC on time. He said the airport authority informed them about the situation yesterday morning through a fax message. Having the information, an executive engineer of the CCC was sent to airport to look after the operation, the mayor said. Earlier, Manjur Alam rolled out the proposed budget of more than Tk 960 crore.
