People at Foothills
Notice served for relocation
Bangladesh Environment Lawyers Association (Bela) yesterday served a legal notice on government agencies for failing to comply with a High Court order that had directed to relocate the people living at foothills in some districts under Chittagong division.
Bela sent the notice asking the authorities concerned to immediately execute the HC order by relocating the people living with risks at the foothills, and said otherwise it will bring contempt charges against them at the court.
Following a writ petition filed by Bela, the HC on August 23 last year had ordered the authorities concerned to take steps to relocate the people living at the foothills of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban areas to safe places within six months.
At least 94 people were reportedly killed in landslides in the areas on June 26 due to the failure to relocate, the legal notice said.
The respondents to the notice include the Chittagong City Corporation mayor, secretaries to the ministries of environment, land, and housing, CDA chairman, director general of the department of environment, and the DCs of the districts.
