Physiotherapy cures most back pains
Say health specialists
Health specialists yesterday said 80 percent of the country's adult population suffer from back pains mainly due to problems in their posture and lifestyle.
They also recommended the people suffering from back pain to go for physiotherapy, which, they said, could bring relief to most of such patients.
The specialists made the observations at a seminar organised by Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre for the Disabled at National Public Library in the capital.
“Problems in postures and lifestyles and lack of exercise are causing an increase in the number of patients with back pain, 95 per cent of whom are curable through physiotherapy,” said Dr Altaf Hossain Sarker, a specialist on back pain.
He also called upon the government to create the post of physiotherapist up to the upazila level and to establish state-run physiotherapy institutions.
National Professor Dr Shaila Khatun stressed the need for prenatal and postnatal physiotherapy for mothers.
“Most women suffer from back pain after giving birth to children. So, I recommend that all mothers receive physiotherapy treatment before and after a child's birth,” she said.
Prof Tauhidul Haque of Bangladesh Medical College and Prof Aaleya Mowla of Institute of Nutrition and Food Science Institute at Dhaka University also addressed the programme.
