Detective Branch (DB) of police on Friday night arrested a former employee of the Saudi embassy from the capital's Rampura area on charges of issuing death threats against three top officials of the embassy. Arrestee ANM Rashid Ahmmed, 57, was sacked from the embassy on charges of corruption and being an activist of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, said DB. Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of DB-North Md Solaiman said Rashid issued the threats against Saudi Ambassador in Dhaka Abdullah Al Bussairy, Deputy Ambassador Hami Al Zamil Hindi and Religious Attaché Ali Saleh Al Bamaka via separate SMSs on June 20 from his cellphone. The SMS sent to Bamaka threatened him with death if he returned to Bangladesh. The remaining two SMSs stated that the ambassador and deputy ambassador would be harmed if they let Bamaka join the embassy, said Solaiman. Afterwards, Jasim Uddin Sarkar, the embassy's legal adviser, filed a GD with Gulshan Police Station on June 27. Rashid, at a press briefing at DMP Media Centre, said his aim was only to frighten the embassy officials. Monirul Islam, DC of DB-South, said police was verifying whether Rashid was linked to the killing of an official of the embassy, Saudi national Khalaf Al Ali, who was shot dead near his Gulshan residence on March 6. Meanwhile, a Dhaka court yesterday placed Rashid on a six-day remand.
