BAT launches afforestation campaign in Ctg

British American Tobacco (BAT) Bangladesh launched its nationwide afforestation campaign and sapling distribution programme in Chittagong yesterday. BAT will distribute more than 40 lakh saplings for free across the country this year. Of those, one lakh will be distributed in Dhaka and 25 lakh in Chittagong city, Bandarban, Khagrachhari, and Cox's Bazar. Environment and Forests Secretary Mesbah Ul Alam inaugurated the event as chief guest, while Zafar Alam, director of Department of Environment in Chittagong, was present as special guest. Banaj Kumar Majumder, deputy commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, Mohammed Shafiul Alam Chowdhury, conservator of forests at Chittagong circle, Gias Uddin, Chittagong divisional leaf manager of BAT, and Zakir Ibne Hai, director for corporate and regulatory affairs of BAT, among others, were present at the function at the company's nursery in Chittagong city. Speaking on the occasion, Mesbah Ul Alam urged BAT to monitor whether the saplings were really sowed and growing well after distribution. BAT initiated its afforstation programme in 1980. Over the last 31 years, the company has distributed more than 71.5 million saplings in the country as part of its 'corporate social responsibility'.
