A businessman died after being stabbed by some miscreants at his house in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj district yesterday. The victim was Shamsul Haque, 48, a food grain businessman, and resident of Norpoti village in the upazila. Police and the victim's family sources said a group of people numbering about 9 to 10 attacked the house of Shamsul Haque around 3:00am. They attacked Zakir Hossain, a school teacher who lives in the house as a tenant, at first. The attackers also took away a mobile phone set and Tk 2000 from him, the sources said. Then the miscreants stabbed Shamsul before hitting his mother Zobeda Begum, 65 and sister Nilu Begum, 40, who tried to save him, the sources added. Hearing hue and cry of family, locals rushed to the house. But attackers managed to leave the scene. Severely injured Shamsul was rushed Chunarugaht Upazila Health Complex. Later, he was shifted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 6:00pm. Sheikh Kabirul Islam, officer-in-charge at Chunarughat Police Station, said the motive behind the killing could not be known immediately. Police, however, suspect that the incident might have been occurred following a long standing dispute between Shamsul's family and some local people over a road in the village. Filing of a case was on process when the report was being written around 8:30pm.
