Little boy's fatal curiosity

Not even in his wildest dreams could Rashedul Islam imagine that the boy lying lifeless on the street next to his West Dholaipar residence in the capital on Friday night could be his son. Taken over by curiosity, he shone a torch on the little face lying on a pool of blood, revealing that his nightmare had come true. It was his only son, Rabiul Islam Sunny. With a cry Rashedul fainted, not able to bear the sight of his dead son whose inquisitiveness had brought him to the spot in the first place. Eight-year-old Sunny was declared dead at Dhaka Medical College Hospital within hours after being hit in the throat by a stray bullet fired by some men arguing over repayment of a loan, said police. His mother, Shahnaj Begum, said, “We never realised when he (Sunny) went out there. All of us were asleep. We awoke on hearing the commotion and my husband (Rashedul) went out to investigate.” “Sunny had gone to the washroom and I was watching the clash from our door but I never saw Sunny go out,” she said. The locals said they heard some people, carrying local weapons, pointing at another group and saying that they were muggers before swooping on them. Police detained five people in this connection.
