Journos protest ban on access to ACC

Leaders of different journalist organisations in a joint statement yesterday protested the ban on journalists' access to Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) office and the restriction on providing information regarding corruption to the media. They called on to withdraw the ban immediately and help journalists carry out their duty. The leaders said that this type of ban in unacceptable and illegal when the parliament has passed an act regarding right to information. They said according to the constitution, people have the right to know about ACC activities and corruption and this is related to the freedom of media. People of the country want to see that ACC is working independently and bravely against corruption but the ban on providing information and access to journalists will tarnish the commission's image, they said. The leaders said that they would prevent any restriction that would hamper journalists' right and freedom of media. President of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ), Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, and its General Secretary Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, president of another faction of BFUJ, Ruhul Amin Gazi, and its General Secretary Shawkat Mahmud, president of a faction of Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), Omar Faruque, and its General Secretary Shaban Mahmud, president of another faction of DUJ, Abdus Shahid, and its General Secretary Muhammad Baker Hossain, Jatiya Press Club President Kamal Uddin and General Secretary Syed Abdal Ahmad, Dhaka Reporters Unity President Shakhawat Hossain and General Secretary Sazzad Alam Khan, signed the statement. On June 28 this year, the ACC authorities imposed a ban on the media's access to its office. According to the notice, journalists can enter the ACC office only if the commission invites them.
