Padma Bridge

Hazari for settlement through Yunus

Staff Correspondent

Controversial Awami League leader Joynal Hazari yesterday urged the government to request Dr Muhammad Yunus to come to a settlement with the World Bank and other donor agencies over funding the Padma bridge project. “Since a man of that much prominence may be able to convince the World Bank and donor countries to fund the Padma bridge, I request the government to ask him (Prof Yunus)…he would be the right person to convince the donors,” he said. Hazari was addressing a discussion, “Construction of Padma bridge with own fund: Our duties”, organised by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote in the capital's Dhaka Reporters Unity. He had arrived uninvited with a guest, Shafiqul Bahar Majumder Tipu, joint general secretary of Muktijoddha Central Command Council, the jote coordinator Wahiduzzaman Mati told The Daily Star. After a long break in his political career, Hazari's arrival at the discussion yesterday geared up speculations that the man once known as the godfather of criminals was becoming active in politics again.
