Speakers at a meeting yesterday demanded trial of the killers of the four national leaders, including Tajuddin Ahmad, who were murdered in Dhaka Central Jail on November 3, 1975. The jail killing case is now pending with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. Today is the 87th birth anniversary of Tajuddin Ahmad, the first prime minister of the Bangladesh government in exile. Marking the occasion, Jatiya Ganotantrik League organised the memorial meeting at Bir Uttam Khawja Nejamuddin auditorium in the capital. Speakers said Tajuddin was one of the great leaders behind formulating the six-point movement demanding full autonomy of the then East Pakistan in 1966. He played an important role in forming the provisional government of Bangladesh in Bangabandhu's absence during the War of Liberation, they said. Tajuddin played a key role in all anti-communal movements after 1947 and was one of the main initiators during the formation of the Awami League in 1949, they said. He was an honest and efficient leader of the nation, speakers added. They also urged everyone to be united under the ideologies of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Tajuddin Ahmad for the development of Bangladesh. Barrister M Amir-Ul- Islam and Bangladesh Krishak League Vice President M A Jalil also addressed the programme. Tajuddin was born in 1925 in Dardaria village at Kapasia upazila in Gazipur. He, along with national leaders Syed Nazrul Islam, Capt M Mansur Ali and AHM Qamaruzzaman, was killed while in custody at Dhaka Central Jail in 1975.
