AL, BNP men clash in Magura: 30 injured

At least 30 people were injured, 14 of them seriously, in a clash between the supporters of Awami League (AL) and BNP in Magura Sadar upazila yesterday. Police quoted local people as saying that the trouble began when the supporters of ward BNP Joint Secretary Md Bazlur Rahman beat up a supporter of Mohammad Shahor Ali, an AL leader of the same ward under Raghobadair Union, at around 9:00am. The supporters of Bazlur Rahman blamed Shahor Ali's men for damaging some mango saplings on a land owned Bazlur Rahman. They locked in an altercation with their rivals and at one stage, physically assaulted Alamgir Sheikh and his mother at Puccu-Khordo village. At around 11:00am, the supporters of both AL and BNP, equipped with lethal weapons swooped on each other, leaving at least 30 people from both sides injured. Being informed, police rushed to the spot, dispersed the clashing groups and brought the situation under control. The seriously injured--Bazlur Rahman, 45, Shahor Ali, 50, Alamgir Sheikh, 40, Delwar Hossain, 40, Salima Akhter, 15, Mohammad Abbasuddin, 20, Kamal Sheikh, 36, Mohammad Rubel Mian, 20, Anwara Begum, 35, Bablur Rahman, 25, Mohammad Akkas Ali, 22, Suman Mian, 19, Abdul Hannan, 30 and Mohammad Ali Biswas, 23-- were admitted to Magura Sadar hospital while the rest given first aid at the hospital. Contacted, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Munshi Asaduzzaman of Magura Police Station, said police have been deployed at the village to avert any further untoward incident. No case was filed with the police station concerned in connection with the incident as filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday.
