The Department of Environment (DoE) stopped a massive destruction of agricultural land in the name of an agro project and seized earth-filling equipment in Joydevpur of Gazipur district yesterday. A team of the DoE found out that a company, Genusys Limited, dug up five lakh cubic feet soil of agricultural land to earth-fill nearly five acres of low-lying similar land, said a press release. Md Shahidul Islam, a ward councilor of Gazipur municipality, had been carrying out the job on behalf of the company owner. Shahidul told the DoE officials that the owner Md Saidur Rahman, an expatriate in the US, gave him Tk 6 crore to procure low land and earth-fill. DoE Director Mohammad Munir Chowdhury said destruction of top soil of the arable land is detrimental to environment and agriculture. Shahidul could not be contacted readily.
