The International CHT Commission (CHTC) has voiced worries over a recent incident of raping of an 11-year-old indigenous girl allegedly by a policeman and demanded exemplary punishment for the perpetrator. "The CHTC strongly condemns this gross violation of basic human rights of the child and demands that the perpetrator be awarded exemplary punishment to prevent recurrence of such crimes in the future," a statement said yesterday. The document was signed by three co-chairs of CHTC Eric Avebury, Sultana Kamal and Elsa Stamatopoulou. "The commission has noted that the alleged rape of an 11-year-old Tripura girl child on August 21 by a police constable in Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhri district is even more alarming, as it involves a member of the law enforcement agencies, whose duty is to protect individuals from such an attack." The CHTC urged the government to ensure justice to the victim and prevent members of law enforcement agencies from committing such "systematic and indiscriminate" violation of rights of indigenous communities. "The CHTC is deeply worried about implications of such incidents on rule of the law and justice system as well as the democratic credentials of the government." The commission also urged the government to protect basic human rights of the indigenous communities and demanded formation of a mixed police force drawn from different communities in CHT area.
