Padma Bridge Loan
Ershad urges Mashiur to resign
Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad yesterday urged that Mashiur Rahman, economic adviser to the prime minister, resigns from his post immediately to pave the way for World Bank's loan to build the Padma bridge.
The former president urged top leaders of all political parties to jointly appeal to the World Bank to reconsider financing the bridge.
“I believe the World Bank will not be able to ignore our national call. We want to construct the Padma bridge with loan from the World Bank,” Ershad said in a written statement sent to the media.
Expressing deep concern over getting WB's loan, Ershad said the World Bank has brought corruption allegations against Mashiur Rahman and he should resign immediately from the post considering the country's interest.
“I know you [Mashiur] are a man of many qualities. It would not be a matter of humiliation if you resign for the sake of country,” Ershad said.
“I call upon Dr Mashiur Rahman -- do not hesitate and resign immediately. The people of the country will remember your sacrifice,” he added.
